چکیده

We present the current estimates of the Galactic merger rate of double-neutron-star (DNS) systems. Using a statistical analysis method, we calculate the probability distribution function (PDF) of the rate estimates, which allows us to assign confidence intervals to the rate estimates. We calculate the Galactic DNS merger rate based on the three known systems B1913+16, B1534+12, and J0737-3039. The discovery of J0737-3039 increases the estimated DNS merger rate by a factor ∼6 than what is previously known. The most likely values of DNS merger rate lie in the range 3−190 Myr depending on different pulsar models. Motivated by a strong correlation between the peak rate estimates and a pulsar luminosity function, we calculate a global probability distribution as a single representation of the parameter space covered by different pulsar population models. We compare the global PDF with the observed supernova Ib/c rate, which sets an upper limit on the DNS merger rate. Finally, we remark on implications of new discoveries such as of J1756−2251, the 4th DNS in the Galactic disk, and J1906+0746, a possible DNS system.

Constraints on the dense matter EOS from the measurements of PSR J 0737 - 3039 A moment of inertia and PSR J 0751 + 1807 mass

The moment of inertia of the pulsar A in the neutron star binary J0737-3039 will soon be measurable through detailed measurements of the periastron advance. We present the calculation of the moment of inertia of neutron stars with the masses of the components of the binary J0737-3039 for a broad range of equations of state of dense matter and discuss the implications of such measurement for con...

Xmm-newton Observation of the Double Pulsar System J0737–3039

We report on a 50 ksec XMM-Newton observation of the double pulsar system J0737–3039 performed on April 2004. We present results of the spectral analysis of these data combined with the much shorter Chandra pointing performed on January 2004. Black body emission with effective temperature of 0.20 −0.02 keV (90% confidence level) and emission radius 75 +30 −9 m for a distance of 0.5 kpc (implyin...

The Very Soft X - Ray Spectrum of the Double Pulsar System J 0737 − 3039

We present the results of an 80 ks ChandraACIS-S observation of the double pulsar system J0737−3039 performed on 2006 June. Furthermore, we report on spectral, spatial and timing analysis of the combined X-ray observations performed so far for this system. Fitting a total of∼ 1100 photons,we show that the X-ray spectrum of the J0737–3039 system is very soft, and not satisfactorily modeled by a ...

X-ray Emission from the Double Neutron Star Binary B1534+12: Powered by the Pulsar Wind?

We report the detection of the double neutron star binary (DNSB) B1534+12 (= J1537+1155) with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This DNSB (Porb = 10.1 hr) consists of the millisecond (recycled) pulsar J1537+1155A (PA = 37.9 ms) and a neutron star not detected in the radio. After the remarkable double pulsar binary J0737−3039, it is the only other DNSB detected in X-rays. We measured the flux of (2...

Green Bank Telescope Measurement of the Systemic Velocity of the Double Pulsar Binary J0737−3039 and Implications for Its Formation

We report on the measurement at 820and 1400-MHz of orbital modulation of the diffractive scintillation timescale from pulsar A in the double-pulsar system J0737−3039 using the Green Bank Telescope. Fits to this modulation determine the systemic velocity in the plane of the sky to be VISS ≃140.9±6.2kms−1. The parallel and perpendicular components of this velocity with respect to the line of node...
